What is happening
Rooibos seeds are scheduled to travel to the International Space Station in October 2026. The purpose is to test how microgravity and cosmic radiation affect germination and growth, with the space-exposed seeds compared against control samples when they return to Earth.
That is the plan as it stands. It is scheduled, not done — this page was written on 21 August 2026, and the launch date may slip. We will not write it as a completed event until it has happened.
What makes it worth watching is not the novelty. It is that rooibos grows commercially nowhere else on earth but this one corner of South Africa, and it already carries EU protected designation of origin status. Sending its seeds to space is a way of putting that place — the Cederberg — on a global map.

Who is doing it
The mission involves the South African Rooibos Council, the space-education company MaxIQ Space, and the South African National Space Agency. The tourism research is led by Prof. Martinette Kruger of North-West University’s TREES research unit, with Curtin University in Australia collaborating.
Seven Cederberg schools and Parklands College are involved, and in February 2026 students from North-West University and Curtin visited the Cederberg to develop tourism products around the mission.
Why send seeds to space
The stated purpose is scientific: to see how microgravity and cosmic radiation affect the germination and growth of rooibos seeds, and to compare the space-exposed seeds with control samples when they come back.
But the mission is also a tourism play, and the people behind it say so plainly. The idea is that a story this unusual points international attention back at the one place on earth where rooibos is actually grown.

What it means for the region
The mission’s organisers have proposed a permanent “Rooibos to Space” interpretation centre in Clanwilliam. That is a proposal, not a building — it has no confirmed timeline, and we will not write as if it exists.
What is real is the ambition behind it: to turn a scientific story into a reason to visit the Cederberg. The challenge, as one of the organisers put it, is “ensuring that every international media story points people back to the Cederberg” — and that tourism should “not replace farming; it should add value to it.”
Can I visit
You cannot visit the space station, but you can visit the place the seeds come from. The Cederberg is where rooibos is grown, and it is the region this whole site is about.
If the mission makes you want to see rooibos in the ground, the honest answer is that we cannot yet tell you which farms take visitors — that is field research we have not finished. What we can tell you is how to get to the region at all.
